Biography

Over the past ten years, Les sœurs Boulay have pinned more than a few tacks on the maps of Quebec, and also on those of Canada and Europe (France, Switzerland). Their two previous albums, Le poids des confettis and 4488 de l’Amour, as well as their latest EP, Lendemains, have sold over 110,000 copies combined, resulting in over four hundred performances in festivals and concert venues before tens of thousands of fans. It all started at the Francouvertes, a competition for emerging artists in Montreal, which they unexpectedly won on a festive and unforgettable evening in 2012. Since then, they have shined at the ADISQ ceremony over the years, taking home a total of five Félix awards: Revelation of the Year and Folk Album of the Year in 2013; Group of the Year in 2014; Folk Album of the Year in 2016; and Group of the Year in 2017. Among other honours, they also received several GAMIQ awards, were named finalists for the Félix-Leclerc and SOCAN awards, made it into the long list of the Polaris Prize, and were singled out by Les Entrées en scène Loto-Québec and Révélations Radio-Canada.

After this past year of living separate lives—Mélanie having given birth to a child and Stéphanie to a solo album—and of finding themselves outside of the duo, Les sœurs Boulay reunite once again, having chosen this path, now more than ever, to create their third LP.

Meanwhile, they have travelled further, suffered more heartbreak, picked up the pieces, and tried, in vain, to rest. In 2018, Mélanie gave birth to a child, Stéphanie to a solo album and a handful of literary works. They have spoken up, sometimes in a spontaneous way, and sometimes in an organized manner (Festival en Chanson de Petite-Vallée, Journées de la Culture, Les Francouvertes, Le Festival Zéro Déchet, etc.). They have penned blogs and columns. Year after year, they are becoming women that are more and more emancipated, lucid, and committed.

It is therefore after this past year of living separately and discovering life outside the duo, that Les sœurs Boulay team up once again, choosing to join forces now more than ever in order to create their third LP. The sisters have their eyes set on the horizon, resolutely towards the sky, searching for answers and solutions. In the current state of the world, in which all the alarms of the planet sound in unison to warn humanity of its imminent fall, they ask: how can we give meaning to all this? How can we do better? How can we not get discouraged? How can we make a difference, as small as it may be? What really matters?
